One of the main motivations of the International zone is to give the possibility to all the countries assembled on the land of Auroville to manifest their contributions to the global evolution of humanity.
The role of the International zone is to illustrate in a living concrete manner, how the principle of unity in diversity is to be applied on the world scale at the level of the various nations and cultures which comprises today’s humanity.
The master plan will offer each country, within the frame of the space allocated, all the freedom to give expression of their participation in the play of the evolution, with the objective in mind, every pavilion will be able to express the soul of the country it represents.
The general layout of the International zone is in order to materialize such a message, proposes a repartition of all the countries by continents. This means five continents organized around Bharat Nivas as a symbol of a host country.
The geographical grouping should help put into clear light the common influences on each country while at the same time allowing manifestation of their original character.

The pavilions will offer a space for the expression for each nation’s search for it’s soul and it’s place in the world. They will be multifunctional with their foundations in educational programmes, research and cultural activities.
The International zone should allow every country to express in the pavilion and the space allocated for it, it’s true identity and soul.
The atmosphere of this zone will be in consequence, serene and quite, excluding all feeling of international exhibition or bazaar.
The purpose of the pavilion is double :
1. To present the great creation of discoveries in all domains through the history
of the countries that have contributed to the evolution of the human conscious ness.
2. To receive in the appropriate facilities the researchers of all subjects who are carrying out the experimentations within CIRUH in connection with Auroville and it’s students.
Majority of the land in International zone is owned by Auroville but 4 types of Paramboke land pass through it and 4 crucial private plots need to be bought. Bharatipuram village is expanding and encroaching Auroville territory. It has a higher percentage of mud roads. There is a consistently significant drop of 16M over a stretch of 1.15Km. There are various canyons and ponds in the International zone, all of which flow toward Irumbai Lake. These water canyons can be utilized in a efficient way. Good part of International Zone is afforested with work trees.
Habitation zone proposal
A layer of residential + commercial buildings would help in increasing the security & vitality of the IZ. This can be achieved through providing small mixed used buildings with a possibility of having small shops on the ground level. This will generate more public activity within the zone and in turn will be useful for the residents to buy everyday grocery. The design incorporates public spaces denoted in yellow along with green open spaces for the residents, but with transitional spaces in between.
